About P3G

Welcome to the Public Population Project in Genomics (P3G), an international consortium dedicated to advancing the field of population genomics. Our mission is to build collaboration, share knowledge, and provide the tools needed for global researchers to better understand the relationship between genetics, environment, and health.

With rapid progress following projects like the Human Genome Project and the International HapMap Project, there is a growing need for large, well-characterized population data sets. These data sets are essential to help researchers unravel the complex interactions between genes and the environment that contribute to common diseases.

P3G works to meet this need by fostering international partnerships and building a strong infrastructure for collaboration.

Our Mission

At P3G, we are dedicated to:

  • Fostering collaboration among researchers and projects in population genomics worldwide.
  • Developing tools and resources that enable biobanks and large-scale genomic studies to share expertise and data in an open, transparent manner.
  • Facilitating knowledge transfer to ensure that research findings can be translated into better strategies for disease prevention and health care.
  • Supporting personalized medicine by helping tailor treatments, medicines, and prevention programs to individuals, families, and entire communities.

A Global Consortium

P3G brings together leading organizations from across the world involved in large-scale genomic epidemiology projects and biobanks. Our membership includes regular members, associate members, and individual experts such as scientists and ethicists. Together, these groups form the principal international body for the harmonization of population genomics projects.

Among our founding and participating members are initiatives such as:

  • CARTaGENE (Canada)
  • Estonian Genome Project
  • GenomEUtwin (involving 8 European countries)
  • Centre for Integrated Genomic Medical Research (UK)
  • Western Australian Genetic Health Project (Australia)
  • Danubian Biobank Foundation (Central Europe)
  • KORA-Gen (Germany)
  • LifeGene (Sweden)
  • National Institutes of Health (USA) including NHLBI and NHGRI

This diversity ensures that P3G is truly international, connecting projects across continents to share resources, expertise, and results.

Learn More Through Our Blog

In addition to providing research tools and resources, the P3G website also features blogs and articles on the latest developments in genomics, biobank collaboration, and personalized medicine.

These resources are designed to help researchers, students, and the general public stay informed and engaged with the fast-growing world of population genomics.

Our Commitment

At P3G, we believe that collaboration is the key to unlocking the full potential of genomic research. By connecting projects, harmonizing approaches, and sharing knowledge, we aim to advance global health through better understanding of genetics and its role in disease prevention and treatment.
